Removals to the Netherlands are easiest to plan when the route, shipment and property access are treated as one job. A small part load from Belgium is operationally different from a complete household arriving from Great Britain, Switzerland or Norway. The first may move within the EU customs territory; the second can require an import declaration and evidence for transfer-of-residence relief.
VANonsite coordinates international removals to Netherlands destinations from the UK and across Europe. For the service options, see our removals to the Netherlands page. This guide explains the route planning behind the move: vehicle capacity, collection and delivery access, packing, inventory detail and the relevant customs path. We check these details before confirming the move rather than building a generic promise around distance alone.

We made a last minute order from the Netherlands to Norway. (3 days ahead of shipping) The communication between us was really great, and the mails were quickly responed to! There were no extra costs, and our items were delivered in the exact condition we sent them off in! We also got a live tracking link on the truck, which made us at ease too :) The truck also looked professional, and proper! Made it to our small town in the middle of the Norwegian winter! 10/10! And lucas is a very lovely guy!Posted on Google![]()

Found this company on referral from an automated site which delivered five company names. We needed to moves boxes and furniture from Venice Italy to Paris France. VANonsite was super-diligent on quotation, and logistics. Very easy to arrange pickup and driver Bogdan was very careful in loading truck. In Paris the delivery was equally efficient, and a day earlier than promised. I would definitely use this service again and recommend them highly.Posted on Google![]()

Lucas was very helpful, patient and responsive throughout the move; their partner company that I arranged the initial shipping details with was also the same. The vehicle was larger than what I needed but everything was secured well for transportation, and no damages. Most importantly, they are legitimate and were also punctual on the day!Posted on Google![]()

I moved my home with VANonsite to a non-EU country and I can really recommend them. The communication was always clear, professional and helpful, which made me trust them from the start. They sent me a list of documents they needed well in advance and were helpful whenever I had questions. The driver helped during loading and unloading, and all my belongings arrived in perfect condition. I also appreciated the attitude of the whole team when there was a problem at the customs, with several people updating me on the situation, very friendly and always making sure I am not worrying, and without any surcharge for the additional time the driver had to invest.Posted on Google![]()

Amazing service! We used VANonsite to move from Berlin to Trondheim. From logistics to drivers everyone was incredibly nice, informative and responsive. We put them in a bit of a pickle as our move was quite sudden but they were wonderful and managed all steps quickly, including Norwegian custom documents for us in a few days. All our things arrived safe and sound, including two plants and a musical instrument. They also offered one of the cheapest prices for relocations from Germany to Norway. Truly recommended.Posted on Google![]()

Start with the origin country, not only the destination
“Removals to Holland” is still a common search phrase, but the correct country name is the Netherlands; North Holland and South Holland are only two of its provinces. For transport planning, the decisive information is the full postcode at both ends. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht can involve apartments, loading restrictions and limited vehicle access, while rural addresses may require checks for narrow roads, bridges or turning space.
The collection country determines the administrative route. Dutch Customs states that personal effects arriving from another EU country do not require a customs declaration because goods move freely within the EU. A shipment coming from a non-EU country, including Great Britain, normally requires an import declaration. Certain territories have special customs or VAT treatment, so country names alone are not always enough.

EU and non-EU moves follow different customs paths
Moving from another EU Member State
For used household effects moving from an EU Member State to the Netherlands, Dutch Customs says that no customs declaration is required. That does not remove the need for a reliable inventory. Restricted items, excise goods, vehicles, commercial property and special territories can follow separate rules. The departure country may also impose practical or regulatory requirements that must be checked before collection.
Moving from Great Britain or another non-EU country
Household goods entering the Netherlands from outside the EU need an import declaration. Dutch Customs explains that qualifying removal goods can generally be imported without import duties when the transfer-of-residence conditions are met, but the exemption must be applied for through the removal company’s customs declaration. It is not automatic and should not be presented as guaranteed.
The current published conditions include transferring normal residence to the EU, generally having lived outside the EU for at least 12 consecutive months, and generally having owned and used the goods for at least six months. The goods are normally imported within 12 months of taking up residence and must not be loaned, pledged, leased or transferred during the stated post-import period. Dutch Customs makes the final decision based on the declaration and evidence.
For the individual move, check the official guidance:
- Dutch Customs: moving things from an EU country.
- Dutch Customs: moving things from a non-EU country.
- Dutch Customs: transfer-of-residence exemption and documents.
- Dutch Customs: what counts as personal belongings.
VANonsite can coordinate the agreed transport and declaration workflow and provide the relevant shipment or vehicle information. Final eligibility, admissibility, duty, VAT and clearance decisions remain with the competent authorities.
Prepare an inventory that works at loading and customs
A useful inventory is more than “20 boxes and furniture”. It should help calculate volume, assign protection and identify the goods if a declaration is required. Group items by room and describe them clearly: used clothing, kitchen utensils, books, bed frame, dining table, bicycle and so on. Number cartons and keep the same numbering through collection and delivery.
- List furniture, cartons, appliances, bicycles, tools and outdoor items separately.
- Add dimensions and photographs for bulky, fragile or unusually heavy pieces.
- Separate used personal effects from new purchases, commercial goods and stock.
- Declare alcohol, tobacco, vehicles, weapons, animal products, plants and cultural objects before booking so current rules can be checked.
- Confirm every late addition before loading; the physical shipment should match the final inventory.
Dutch Customs lists special or restricted categories that cannot simply be hidden inside household effects. A precise list protects the route plan and helps avoid an avoidable stop when the vehicle is already at the border or terminal.
Part-load or dedicated removals to the Netherlands?
Both options can work for international furniture removals to Netherlands addresses. The right choice depends on volume, timing, handling and access rather than a single headline price.
| Option | Usually suits | How it is planned | Important trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Part load | Smaller or medium consignments with flexible dates | Reserved space is coordinated with other compatible work on a European route | Collection and delivery windows depend on the wider schedule |
| Dedicated vehicle | Larger homes, fragile loads or fixed handovers | Capacity and timing are planned around one booking | Uses more dedicated vehicle and crew capacity |
| Last-minute option | Urgent moves with a suitable available vehicle and crew | A 1-3 day transport may be possible after route, access and documents are checked | Availability cannot be promised before the specific move is confirmed |
Part load can be efficient when the shipment fits a route already serving the Netherlands and the dates are flexible. Dedicated transport gives more control where a tenancy end, key handover or business opening creates a fixed deadline. Our Last-Minute Moving service is a separate, conditional option for urgent moves; the stated 1-3 day possibility depends on live capacity and a viable route.

Access planning in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and other Dutch cities
A long-distance move can still fail at the final 50 metres. Many Dutch properties have steep stairs, narrow entrances or limited lift access. Central streets, canals, cycle lanes, tram routes and controlled parking can affect where a removal vehicle can safely stop. Apartment buildings may require a booked lift or a defined delivery window.
Send photographs of the entrance, stairs, lift, parking area and the route from the vehicle to the door. Confirm the floor, walking distance and whether the building manager or municipality requires a reservation or permit. VANonsite checks the vehicle-access plan for the actual postcode; we do not assume that every Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Eindhoven or Groningen address can take the same vehicle.
Collection and delivery day
Before collection, finish any agreed self-packing, keep the vehicle approach clear and separate passports, keys, medication and items that must not be loaded. Walk through the property with the team leader and identify fragile, high-value and late-added items. If customs documents apply, the goods loaded should remain consistent with the final signed inventory.
At delivery, confirm who will meet the vehicle, when access begins and where each numbered carton belongs. Place large furniture before rooms fill with boxes, then complete any agreed reassembly. Checking the inventory as unloading progresses is faster and more reliable than trying to reconstruct the load after the crew has left.
Packing for an international road move
Furniture and cartons may travel through several road conditions and, on UK routes, a ferry or tunnel crossing. Protect finished surfaces and corners, remove loose shelves, label fittings and keep screws with the relevant item. Heavy contents belong in smaller cartons; light bedding and lampshades can use larger boxes. Keep passports, medication, keys and first-night essentials with you.
Our packing services can cover selected fragile items or a wider household pack. During the survey we identify materials, dismantling, specialist protection and crew time. This makes the quotation specific to the actual work instead of adding an unexplained general packing charge.
Storage when the Dutch property is not ready
A tenancy can end before the destination is available, or a purchase and key handover can move. If direct delivery is uncertain, storage should be planned as a separate stage. We need the likely duration, access requirements and final delivery address to quote it correctly.
Do not assume the goods can remain on an international vehicle while keys are delayed. The vehicle may be committed to another route, and customs or transit records may reflect the planned movement. Agreeing the contingency before dispatch gives the operations team a workable alternative.

What determines the cost?
The price of van removals to Netherlands destinations depends on the shipment volume, origin and distance, service model, dates, collection and delivery access, crew time, parking, packing, dismantling, storage and any customs coordination required. A quotation should state its assumptions so two offers can be compared on the same work.
Start with the quotation request form above. Pricing is calculated internally and sent by email; the agreed transport scope depends on the final inventory, photographs and access details. For the broader country overview, visit our Removals to the Netherlands hub. For a Great Britain origin, our customs clearance guidance explains how transport and declarations fit together.
Why VANonsite for international removals to the Netherlands?
VANonsite combines European route experience with the property-level details that decide whether a move works: usable inventory, vehicle capacity, access, protection, origin-country formalities and delivery order. Our operations team reviews evidence before collection rather than relying on a generic country template.
You receive a recommendation based on the actual shipment and route, with a clear distinction between shared capacity, dedicated transport and conditional last-minute service. Where customs apply, we explain responsibilities and use current official guidance without promising an authority’s decision.
Removals to Netherlands: frequently asked questions
Do household goods from another EU country need a Dutch customs declaration?
Dutch Customs states that removal goods and personal effects arriving from another EU country do not require a customs declaration. Special rules can still apply to excise goods, vehicles, restricted products and special territories.
Do UK removals to the Netherlands need an import declaration?
Yes. Great Britain is outside the EU customs territory, so household effects entering the Netherlands require an import declaration. Qualifying transfer-of-residence goods may receive relief when the published conditions and evidence are accepted.
Can I book a part load?
Part load can suit smaller or medium shipments with flexible dates when the goods and route fit available shared capacity. A dedicated vehicle can be better for fixed deadlines, larger homes or fragile loads.
Is a 1-3 day move possible?
It may be possible through Last-Minute Moving when a suitable vehicle, crew, access plan and customs path are available. Timing must be confirmed for the exact shipment; it is not a standard guarantee.
What should I send for an accurate quotation?
Send both addresses, preferred dates, a room-by-room inventory, photographs or dimensions for unusual items, and details of stairs, lifts and parking. State whether you need packing, dismantling, storage or customs support.
Request a route-specific quotation
