UK to France removals company: compare quotes before booking

Table of Contents

Compare the job, not just the headline price

Before choosing a UK to France removals company, give each mover the same inventory, addresses and access details. Then compare what the written quote actually includes: the vehicle, crew, collection and delivery windows, protection, customs work and exclusions. A lower transport figure is not necessarily a lower price for the same service.

This is a buyer’s checklist, not a league table of removal firms. It helps you identify the questions that need a written answer before you book. For VANonsite’s route options and the practical collection-to-delivery process, see international removals from the UK to France. For other departure countries, start with our removals to France service.

Start here: settle the load list, separate essential dates from preferences, and flag the awkward item or access restriction. Those details make quotes comparable. If the French property will not be ready, include storage in the brief from the beginning rather than treating it as an afterthought.

We made a last minute order from the Netherlands to Norway. (3 days ahead of shipping) The communication between us was really great, and the mails were quickly responed to! There were no extra costs, and our items were delivered in the exact condition we sent them off in! We also got a live tracking link on the truck, which made us at ease too :) The truck also looked professional, and proper! Made it to our small town in the middle of the Norwegian winter! 10/10! And lucas is a very lovely guy!

Profesjonalna, rzetelna firma – zdecydowanie polecam!

Found this company on referral from an automated site which delivered five company names. We needed to moves boxes and furniture from Venice Italy to Paris France. VANonsite was super-diligent on quotation, and logistics. Very easy to arrange pickup and driver Bogdan was very careful in loading truck. In Paris the delivery was equally efficient, and a day earlier than promised. I would definitely use this service again and recommend them highly.

Lucas was very helpful, patient and responsive throughout the move; their partner company that I arranged the initial shipping details with was also the same. The vehicle was larger than what I needed but everything was secured well for transportation, and no damages. Most importantly, they are legitimate and were also punctual on the day!

I moved my home with VANonsite to a non-EU country and I can really recommend them. The communication was always clear, professional and helpful, which made me trust them from the start. They sent me a list of documents they needed well in advance and were helpful whenever I had questions. The driver helped during loading and unloading, and all my belongings arrived in perfect condition. I also appreciated the attitude of the whole team when there was a problem at the customs, with several people updating me on the situation, very friendly and always making sure I am not worrying, and without any surcharge for the additional time the driver had to invest.

Amazing service! We used VANonsite to move from Berlin to Trondheim. From logistics to drivers everyone was incredibly nice, informative and responsive. We put them in a bit of a pickle as our move was quite sudden but they were wonderful and managed all steps quickly, including Norwegian custom documents for us in a few days. All our things arrived safe and sound, including two plants and a musical instrument. They also offered one of the cheapest prices for relocations from Germany to Norway. Truly recommended.

Give every company the same brief

“A two-bedroom flat” is a starting description, not a measured load. One household may have a few light cabinets; another may have books, tools and solid-wood furniture. List the contents you are actually taking, estimate the box count and give dimensions for the largest or unusually heavy pieces. Say which furniture will travel assembled.

  • Route: collection and delivery locations, with any separate collection points or storage stops.
  • Load: furniture list, box count, dimensions, heavy items and anything needing special handling.
  • Access at both ends: floors, stairs, lift dimensions, door widths, carrying distance and where a suitable vehicle can stop.
  • Dates: when collection is possible, the earliest receiving date and any fixed deadline.
  • Work required: packing, dismantling, lifting assistance, inside placement, unpacking or assembly.
  • Shipment context: main-home relocation, second-home furniture or another type of consignment. Ask the team to check the relevant customs preparation.

Photos help where words leave room for interpretation. Show the entrance, stair turn and parking approach, not just the furniture. If a wardrobe cannot pass the landing while assembled, the quote needs to address dismantling and who will do it. Record changes to the brief before accepting a revised offer.

Ten questions to ask before you book

  1. Is the load travelling on a dedicated vehicle or sharing capacity, and are any transfers planned?
  2. What vehicle space and payload allowance does the quote cover, and what inventory supports that choice?
  3. How many people are included at collection and delivery, and what lifting help is expected from me?
  4. Which packing materials, furniture protection and loading work are included?
  5. Who is responsible for dismantling, reassembly and placement in the required rooms?
  6. What are the collection and delivery windows, and which dates are confirmed rather than requested?
  7. Who checks the customs documents, who makes the arrangements and what charges are separate?
  8. What happens if keys, parking, access or the final inventory change?
  9. Who is my contact during the journey, and which updates or tracking are available for this service?
  10. What do the written terms say about payment, cancellation, liability and reporting damage?

Useful answers refer to your actual load and property. “Everything is included” is not a substitute for a scope. If an answer affects whether the move can happen, ask for it in the booking confirmation. Treat an unanswered essential requirement as something to resolve, not as an implied promise.

Read the quote line by line

For example, one offer might include two people carrying a cabinet upstairs while another ends with unloading beside the vehicle. Those are different jobs, even if both are labelled “door-to-door”. Check the agreed room placement, crew and access assumptions before comparing the totals. This is an illustration of scope differences, not a quotation or a claim about another company.

QuestionWhy it matters
Direct or sharedPredictability vs price
What protection is includedDamage risk control
What documents are neededBorder delays prevention
How do you handle stairs and accessTime and labour accuracy
How will I get updatesStress reduction and planning
What is excludedStops surprise costs
Do you photograph conditionProtects you if damage occurs
Who disassembles furniturePrevents last minute chaos

Ask separately about crossing costs, customs-clearance work, packing materials, storage, waiting, additional handling and any applicable taxes. Confirm how they are shown in the final offer. VANonsite’s automatic transport estimate does not include ferry crossings or customs-clearance costs; these are quoted separately where required. Do not assume a transport estimate is an all-inclusive booked service.

Keep the version of the inventory and access information used for each quote. When an offer is revised, check whether the price changed because the scope changed. That is more useful than scoring firms on a made-up overall rating. Compare written answers to the requirements that matter to your move.

Dedicated or part-load transport: compare the constraints

A dedicated option and a shared-capacity option can both be suitable, but they need different questions. With dedicated transport, confirm the vehicle allocation and whether the agreed schedule fits collection and receiving access. Do not infer a guaranteed arrival time merely from the word “direct”.

With part-load removals to France, ask about the collection window, delivery window, any planned storage or transfer and when the receiving date will be confirmed. Tell the mover if you can wait for a suitable route, or if you need the goods for a fixed handover. Compare the same inventory and handling requirements for both options.

A compact load does not automatically mean one person can handle it. A single heavy cabinet may need more help than many light cartons. Agree the crew and lifting responsibilities independently of the vehicle size.

Check access before agreeing the crew and vehicle

The final few metres can change the plan. Measure the narrow doorway or lift, identify the tight stair turn and explain how far the crew must carry from the stopping point. A general photograph of the front of the building may not show the obstacle that matters.

Confirm who arranges any necessary parking or building permissions and whether there are receiving hours. For a French apartment, ask about the lift and any restrictions on using it for furniture. If a large vehicle cannot reach the entrance, have the alternative approach agreed before collection rather than leaving it to the driver on arrival.

The photographs below show existing VANonsite European transport examples. Their original route descriptions are retained; they are not presented as case studies of this UK-to-France move.

Ask who handles customs preparation

A mover’s willingness to discuss documents is useful, but a transport booking is not proof that you qualify for customs relief. Main-residence transfers and furniture for a second home are not interchangeable. Tell the team which situation applies before the shipment is planned.

French Customs sets conditions for relief on a transfer of main residence from outside the EU and specifies supporting documents. Its official residence-transfer guidance also addresses second-home goods separately. Ask who checks your eligibility and inventory, what must be supplied before collection and which costs remain outside transport. Do not rely on a short generic document list as approval.

List new purchases, commercial goods or unusual items separately and have their treatment checked. Residence or visa permission is a separate issue: use France-Visas to assess your circumstances. This checklist concerns choosing and briefing the mover, not immigration advice.

Short-term and long-term storage between the UK and France

A gap between leaving the UK property and receiving keys in France can change the whole quotation. Ask about short-term storage if the gap is brief, or long-term storage if the receiving date is uncertain. These describe your requirement; they do not confirm a storage location, available capacity or a particular facility standard.

  • Where would the goods be held, and is that location confirmed for this booking?
  • Who collects, unloads, records and reloads the consignment, and are those movements priced separately?
  • What storage period is included, how are extensions charged and what notice is needed for onward delivery?
  • Can you access individual items, or must the whole load be retrieved?
  • How are condition, inventory and liability recorded at the handovers?

For a move to France, agree whether storage takes place before departure or after arrival and how the customs and onward-delivery plan fits around it. Do not assume that a storage offer includes both transport legs. Start with VANonsite storage options and ask the team to confirm the location, suitability and availability for your dates.

Protection, packing and liability need separate answers

Ask what happens to each vulnerable item, not just whether the van carries blankets. A glass cabinet, an appliance and loose boxes need different preparation. Record who packs the item, what dismantling is agreed and whether the team will take it to the required room. Photograph existing damage and keep a consistent inventory for both handovers.

If you need professional packing or white-glove handling and inside placement, list that work explicitly. Do not assume unpacking, assembly or specialist equipment is included in every removal package. Confirm feasibility for unusually heavy, fragile or valuable items before booking.

Read the actual liability terms, exclusions and reporting procedure. Ask how owner-packed cartons and high-value items are treated and whether extra protection is appropriate. Do not infer insurance cover, a compensation limit or a guarantee from the words “fully insured” alone.

Capacity also needs two checks: usable space and weight. Books, records, tools and gym equipment can make a compact load heavy. Give box dimensions where possible rather than relying on a universal “boxes per cubic metre” rule. Have the team confirm the appropriate vehicle and safe loading arrangement from your real list.

Agree what happens when dates or access change

Separate your preferred date from the date that cannot move. If keys are delayed, the answer may involve waiting, storage or rescheduling, each with practical consequences. Ask who can authorise a change and how you will receive confirmation. Keep the collection and receiving contacts reachable.

VANonsite’s Last Minute Moving service may offer a 1–3 day option where the route, load, documents and availability allow it. It is not a universal transit promise for every UK-to-France shipment. Request confirmation for your actual dates before relying on an urgent schedule.

Before collection, confirm the final inventory, packing responsibilities, documents, crew and access. Before delivery, confirm the receiving window and where items must finish. Agree which tracking or progress updates are available for the booked service rather than assuming GPS applies to every load.

Use VANonsite’s estimate and quote request for different tasks

The route estimate calculator lets you enter pickup and delivery locations and compare indicative vehicle figures. It is a budgeting tool, not a reservation. It does not ask for your date, full inventory or access notes, so it cannot establish that the service fits your particular move.

For a service quote, send VANonsite a quote request with the actual addresses, preferred date and the important details in the notes. Include the largest items, stairs or lift, parking approach, packing requirements and any storage gap. Prices are calculated internally and sent by e-mail. The team can then review the scope and availability before you book.

Use the relevant service as a starting point: household removals, furniture transport, student moves or office removals. For the specific cross-border route, return to our UK-to-France removals guide and quote options. The useful next step is a consistent brief, not another vague price request.

Questions about choosing a mover

Is the cheapest quote the best choice?

Not necessarily. First check that the same inventory, crew, access, timing and additional work are covered. A lower price may reflect a smaller scope or a more flexible schedule. Compare those differences before deciding whether the offer meets your requirements.

Should I choose a man-and-van service for a small move?

Consider the measured load, payload, crew and handling requirements rather than the label. A few heavy items can require extra lifting assistance. Ask the mover to confirm both the suitable vehicle and the help included at each address.

Can I arrange storage if my French property is not ready?

Ask for a storage-and-onward-delivery plan before booking. Confirm the location, period, charges, access arrangements and handover records. Availability must be checked for the specific consignment and dates; do not assume storage is included in a transport figure.

Which warning signs should make me ask more questions?

An unexplained all-inclusive promise, a vehicle recommendation without a load list, no answer about lifting responsibilities or an exact arrival promise without considering the route and access. These are reasons to obtain clarification, not proof that a particular company is unreliable.

What should I keep once the booking is confirmed?

Keep the agreed inventory, scope, price breakdown, collection and delivery windows, written terms and contact details together. Record later changes in the same place. At collection and delivery, use that shared record to check the consignment and flag discrepancies promptly under the agreed procedure.

Why can transport sometimes take longer?

From 1 July 2026, new tachograph regulations will come into force in the European Union, also covering some smaller transport vehicles used in international transport.

A tachograph records driving time, breaks, and the driver’s rest periods. In practice, this means that the driver must strictly comply with working time limits. Sometimes, even when close to the loading or delivery location, the driver may be required to take a break or stop driving in accordance with the regulations.

As a result, on some international routes, loading, transit, or delivery times may be longer. This change is beyond VANonsite’s control and affects the entire transport industry in Europe.

We make every effort to plan each transport as efficiently, safely, and in full compliance with applicable regulations as possible.
